How to Find Peppersauce Cave in Arizona

If you’re looking for a little adventure on your trip to Arizona then I want to tell you about Peppersauce Cave located in the small town of Oracle.

Just about an hour outside of Tucson, deep in the Santa Catalina Mountains, you can explore a unique geological wonder known as Peppersauce Cave.

This cave is so unique because it offers an excellent chance for some safe and fun exploration of this fascinating cave system. The best part? There’s a large underground lake at the end which is so cool to see!

Peppersauce Cave is Perfect for Beginner Spelunkers

The main route to the lake in Peppersauce Cave is well marked very suitable for beginner spelunkers. It’s not too challenging and practically impossible to get lost.

Below is a map of the main section of Peppersauce Cave. This is the most standard route through the cave and the way most visitors take who want to see the lake.

A cave map of Peppersauce Cave in Tucson, Arizona. The map shows the entire inside of the cave with the underground lakes and different rooms underground

The cave does continue on past the main lake (seen in the top left corner of the photo). However, I have not gone past this point and going past the lake is better suited for more experienced spelunkers.

If you are experienced and prepared enough to explore the less traveled sections of the cave where there may be no signage, then you are welcome to do so.

But, this guide is more geared towards us travelers who may be doing something like this for the first time. For travelers who are looking for an exciting adventure on their trip to Tucson and who want to see the unique underground lake.

This was actually my first time spelunking so I can say for sure that this was a great first experience for me!

So I hope this guide helps you better know what to expect and how to find your way around Peppersauce Cave.

Where Is Peppersauce Cave?

Peppersauce cave is located on the northeastern side of Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Getting to the cave entrance is just about a 1 hour drive from Tucson.

How to Find Peppersauce Cave

Finding the location of the cave is pretty easy. All you need are these coordinates: 32.5243° N, -110.7074° W

You can also just type in “Peppersauce Cave” into your Apple or Google Maps and it will take you to the same place.

You will have to drive on some country mountain roads and hike on a short trail to find the cave entrance. But, it really isn’t too difficult.

In these next few paragraphs I will tell you everything you’ll need to know about driving there and finding it.

A photo taken of the main lake. The lake is bright blue and goes deeper and darker blue as it goes back. There are rocks all around the lake.

Do You Need 4×4 or High Clearance Vehicle?

I would definitely recommend that you have a high clearance vehicle to get to the cave. You don’t need 4 wheel drive, but having a higher clearance will surely help the drive go smoother.

Mount Lemmon Highway (the main road to the cave) is only paved to a certain point. After you pass the Arizona Zipline Adventures (about 5 miles from the start of the cave) the road becomes gravel.

This gravel road isn’t too bad and it is still a two lane road. A sedan would make it okay here up until you reach Peppersauce Campground.

After you hit the campground, you have another 2 miles to drive until you reach the entrance of the cave. This section of the road is significantly rougher. There are larger rocks and potholes to dodge.

You might be okay in a sedan if you take it very slowly, but you could easily damage the front bumper of your car. I wouldn’t want to take my Elantra on this road.

Do You Need a Permit?

No, exploring Peppersauce Cave is completely free and open to the public. You do not need any permit or reservation to visit the cave.

Best Time to Visit Peppersauce Cave

We went spelunking in Peppersauce Cave the first week of December, and I would say that winter is probably the best time to go.

In winter, this part of Arizona does get chilly. It was about 40°F outside when we were walking the trail to the cave entrance. Getting inside the cave was a nice chance to get a break from the wind and cold.

The cave is quite warm on the inside and it is pretty humid in there as well. Going during summer could pose a danger in the heat. Plus, summer monsoons can cause the cave to be extremely muddy.

Springtime rain can also make the cave muddy so I think the best time to visit Peppersauce Cave is between November-February. Just try to keep an eye out on the weather and go after a dry period if possible.

In December we didn’t come across too much mud, it was mostly dirt/ dust.

I also want to mention that we explored Peppersauce Cave at night. We got there around 8 PM, and there was nobody there! It can be a little scarier, but if you want the cave to yourself, I’d suggest going at night.

Things to Bring

  • Headlamp
  • Extra flashlight for each person
  • Water (I brought this 2L Camelback and it was enough for both my partner and I)
  • Old clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (maybe an extra pair of clothes in the car too)
  • Old tennis shoes/ close toed shoes
  • Hard hat if you’re a tall person to protect your head

Parking for Peppersauce Cave

There is no real parking area for the cave. There are no signs for the cave either off the road telling you where it is.

Once you reach where your GPS takes you, around the corner there will be a medium size pull off on the left side of the road. It is only big enough to fit about 6 cars.

From here it is only about a few minutes walk to the entrance of the cave.

Finding Peppersauce Cave

Once you park, you will walk back across the street and to the corner of the road where you will see a small opening in the brush which looks like a pathway.

A photo taken on the trail leading to the entrance of Peppersauce Cave. The trail is rocky with desert plants surrounding it. It is nighttime in the photo and the flashlight is shining down the rocky trail.

You will follow this trail straight back until you come upon an open area with a large green metal sign signaling that the entrance to the cave is near.

A photo of the green sign placed outside of the two entrances.

Main Entrance vs. Side Entrance

There are two entrances that will take you inside Peppersauce Cave. The green sign is built in between the two entrances. There is a map of the cave on the sign as well to help you understand where each entrance is.

The main entrance is after the green sign and the side entrance is right before the sign.

Getting to the main entrance, you will have to hike up a short and steep rocky trail to get to the cave opening in the mountain.

Getting to the side entrance looks more accessible, but I wouldn’t recommend it if it’s your first time exploring Peppersauce.

Going through the main entrance makes it a pretty much a straight shot to the lake with a only few tight crawl spaces here and there.

There are also arrows on the walls guiding you out of the cave from the lake, so it is pretty much impossible to get lost if you stick to the main “trail”.

A photo of the green arrow sign on the wall which reads "out" on the walls of Peppersauce Cave.

Going in from the side entrance, you have a much further way to travel to reach the lake.

We did not explore this part of the cave so I can’t say for sure how it is. I am also not sure if there are any arrows or guides to help you in this section of the cave.

Route to the Main Lake

Easier & More Beginner Friendly Option

Below I am going to briefly summarize how to find the underground lake and try my best to describe the way to get there!

Main entrance to Peppersauce Cave

When you enter through the main entrance, you will meet your first (and probably most challenging) part of the adventure. A small opening in the rock forcing you to army crawl to get through to the next room.

A photo of me army crawling through a tight space on the ground in the cave.

As you enter this room, it will be large and open. Keep an eye out for the green arrows on the walls helping you find the correct way to go. You can even see one in the above picture.

This route is pretty straightforward, you basically just have to go wherever the largest room is while following the arrows.

A short time later, you’ll find yourself going through another tight space. These two tall slanted rocks.

A photo of me going through another tight space between two tall, flat rocks inside the cave. My headlamp is shining towards the camera and I am smiling.

Believe it or not, this leads to a large room on the other side.

You’ll keep following the “trail”, room to room, and you’ll pass by some very unique rock formations.

A photo inside Peppersauce Cave where you can see a unique rock formation and a natural arch shape in the cave walls.

As long as you keep seeing green arrows, you know you’re on the right track.

Towards the end, there was one part where we got confused on which way to go. With more searching, we finally found a green arrow guiding us through the last small and difficult crawl space.

Once you get through this part, it will open up into a larger room where you’ll see a ladder leading down below into another room.

A photo of the metal ladder going down into the room of the main lake in the cave.

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the lake!

Once you reach the bottom of the ladder, shine your light to your left and you will see the underground lake.

A photo of a woman standing in front of the main underground lake in the cave shining her flashlight into the bright blue water.

You will have to climb down some rocks to get to the spot I was standing in, but you don’t have to. You can see the lake just fine from the “overlook” above by the ladder.

Also I do just want to point out that you should not swim or drink this water. Due to vandalism and littering there have been high levels of bacteria reported in the lake.

So let that be a reminder to always pack in what you pack out and respect these beautiful places we have on our planet!

How Long Does it Take to Explore Peppersauce Cave?

It really depends on how much you want to see of the cave.

We were mainly interested in getting to the end and seeing the main lake so we were only in there for about an hour and a half

But if you want to explore the further sections, you could easily spend up to 7-8 hours in the cave.

My Final Thoughts

I loved exploring Peppersauce Cave. To this day it’s one of my favorite adventures from my time in Arizona. It was a perfect place for our introduction to spelunking.

If you only go through the main section of the cave to the lake, it’s super beginner-friendly.

I’d say this is a great activity for families, groups of friends, or couples looking for a little off the beaten path adventure on their trip to Tucson.

I hope this post helped you prepare for your trip to Peppersauce Cave and thank you so much for reading!

We missed Peppersauce Cave on our previous Tucson visits. Looks like such a gem, especially with the lake inside. Will be saving this for our next Arizona trip.

Wow, seeing the picture of the first entrance to Peppersauce Cave gave me serious claustrophobia 😀 Not sure I’d be able to do it, but this undeground lake looks so cool!
