If you’ve ever driven through Amarillo on Route 66, chances are you’ve driven past Cadillac Ranch.
Cadillac Ranch is a unique art installation right out in the middle of the desert of the Texas Panhandle. It showcases ten Cadillacs “crashed” nose down into the ground.
Not only are these cars half buried in the dirt, but they’re also painted!

This sculpture has attracted visitors driving the historic Route 66 for decades. It is one of the most unique attractions in Amarillo, and a great spot for photo ops.
In this post I’m giving you everything you need to know before heading out to view this one of a kind roadside oddity.
The Story of Cadillac Ranch
Cadillac Ranch was created in 1974 by a group of artist hippies from San Francisco who called themselves, “Ant Farm”. The piece was funded by Amarillo-native Stanley Marsh who wanted to create something unique and outlandish in the Texas plains.
The Ant Farm was inspired by the evolution of the Cadillac’s tailfin design over the years. Thus, they came up with the idea of taking ten vintage Cadillac cars (models from 1949 to 1963) and half-burying them in the ground nose-first to showcase the tail end of the car.

The cars are arranged chronologically, showcasing the changing design of Cadillac tail fins, a symbol of American automotive history and culture.
Over time as people started to stop along Route 66 and visit the sculpture, they would deface them or rip off pieces of the cars as souvenirs.
Eventually The Ant Farm and Marsh came to encourage people adding their own creativity to the cars.
Can Visitors Paint on the Cars?
Yes. Today, anyone is able to bring a can of spray paint and add their own twist to the art piece.
If you don’t have a chance to pick up some spray paint, you might find some leftover cans on the ground next to the cars like we did.
At this point there are so many layers of spray paint on these cars, that you can literally peel some paint off because it’s so thick.
Especially in the hot Texas sun, these layers of paint can melt and become almost soft and squishy.

The fact that this sculpture is always changing by the hands of its visitors is really an amazing and unique aspect to this art installation.
How to Find Cadillac Ranch
This art sculpture is pretty easy to find. It’s located right on the side of Route 66 (Interstate 40) west of Amarillo.
You can find it by typing in Cadillac Ranch into your Apple or Google Maps and it will take you right to it.
There is a gravel parking area on the side of the outer road with enough space to fit a few dozen cars.
You will be able to see the ten cars in the distance. You will be required to walk a short distance on a flat, dirt pathway to see the cars up close.
Does it Cost to Visit?
No. Cadillac Ranch is a free roadside attraction.
Best Time to Visit
The Cadillac Ranch sculpture is open year round, but I would advise against visiting in the heat of summer. Texas gets dangerously hot in summer, and although you don’t have to be outside for long to see this attraction it will be less pleasant when its over 100℉.
Spring, fall, and winter will grant you with better weather to have the best experience viewing this art piece.
Things to do Near Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo
Amarillo is a vibrant little Texan town full of unique things to do. After you visit Cadillac Ranch, consider visiting one of the following tourist attractions:
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
One of my favorite attractions in Amarillo was Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
It’s about a 30 minute drive south of the city, but I can assure you it will be totally worth it to visit.

This state park is home to the second largest canyon in the USA, right behind the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
You can leisurely take the scenic drive through the park, hike one of the several trails, or camp right on the rim. If you’re looking to get some awesome views in the area, Palo Duro Canyon is the place to go.
Admission to this park will cost you $8 per person and is valid for the entire day.
If you want to learn more about Palo Duro Canyon State Park, I’ve written a blog post with everything you need to know before visiting. You can view that article here.
Amarillo Botanical Gardens
The Amarillo Botanical Gardens is a four acre park located on the edge of town, serving as an escape from the fast paced city life.
There are a few different gardens to visit including a rose garden, Japanese garden, desert garden, butterfly garden, and more.
Admission to the gardens goes for $8 per adult, $6 for seniors (60+), and children under 5 are free.
Explore Route 66-Sixth Street Historic District
The US Route 66–Sixth Street Historic District is a nostalgic journey through time, preserving the vibrant spirit of the iconic Route 66.
This area is lined with charming, vintage buildings that reflect styles of the early to mid 1900s. Many have been restored into specialty shops, antique stores, art galleries, and restaurants.
Walking down Sixth Street, you’ll encounter a blend of retro neon signs, classic diners, and old gas stations that evoke the golden era of road trips across America.
It’s definitely worth a stop if you’re looking to spend a few hours walking around and browsing different local businesses.
Most of the shops and tourist spots will be located between Western & Georgia Street.
